Dandeli is a town in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka , India, in the Western Ghats region. Dandeli is located on the bank of the Kali river. Old Dandeli is a industrial town with companies, including Indian Plywood Mill, Lalbhai ferro-manganese Factory, West Coast Paper Mill, Indian Saw Mill, and a number of small industries around the Dandeli and Karnataka Power Corporation.
Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary is the second largest wildlife sanctuary in Karnataka. The sanctuary which, declared a tiger reserve in 2007, is crisscrossed by River Kaneri and River Nagajhari, tributaries of River Kali.
The sanctuary is the natural habitat for several wildlife species such as tigers, leopards, black panthers, elephants, gaur and langur. Jungle jeep safaris are the best way to see these animals many of which also climb atop the cars.
On a ride down the river, a variety of birds can be sighted. Hornbills flying around, kingfishers, darters and egrets make up more than 300 species of birds. Different types of reptiles are also found.
One of the most famous tourist spots and a must-visit, Shiroli Peak is located within the Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary. It is believed to be the highest point in the area. The peak offers excellent views of the Western Ghats
The limestone Kavala Caves are situated at a distance of about 25 km from Dandeli. The caves house a Shiva Lingam and one has to descend 375 steps reach. The last 40 ft requires crawling through a narrow tunnel. Top
